Today I made butanol C4H9OH. here are some facts about butanol and a photo of the model.
1. Butanol has four isomeric structures.
2. Melting point -122.8°F
3. Boiling point 243.3°F
4. Butanol can be used as fuel and is more similar to gasoline then ethanol.
Notice how the boiling point of the alcohols are going up as the size of the molecules goes up? Same thing happens to the alkanes.
ReplyDeleteThis model is actually tert-butanol, an isomer. The main type of butanol is n-butanol, which is chain-shaped.
ReplyDeleteThanks for clarifying that. I didn't know there were so many isomers of butane, but it makes sense that as the molecules get larger, there will also be more ways of putting them together.
ReplyDeleteI mean butanol ,not butane .
ReplyDeleteI just looked it up and butanol has 4 isomers, while pentanol has 8.
